Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Level II Beds

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Level II Beds

This indicator is a count of NICU Level II beds. When displayed as a rate, it is the number of NICU level II beds per 1,000 recorded live births. Recorded births are births that occurred in the county regardless of state or county residence.

A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a unit of a hospital specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. A Level II NICU can care for babies born at 32 weeks gestational age or greater (often referred to as moderately preterm babies) or babies who are full-term but require close monitoring or intravenous antibiotics after birth. The number of beds indicates the number who may potentially receive these services. A NICU may also be called a newborn intensive care unit, intensive care nursery (ICN), or special care baby unit (SCBU). The NICU is distinct from the special care nursery (SCN) in that it provides a high level of intensive care to premature infants while the SCN provides specialized care for infants with less severe medical problems.

In 2024, the rate per 1,000 of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Level II Beds in Alachua County was 0 compared to Florida at 1.4. The line graph shows change over time when there are at least three years of data.

Data Note(s)

FLHealthCHARTS.gov is provided by the Florida Department of Health, Division of Public Health Statistics and Performance Management.

Data Source: Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA)

  • Chart will display if there are at least three years of data.

  • Multi-year counts are a sum of the selected years, not an average.

  • Quartiles are calculated when data is available for at least 51 counties.

  • MOV - Measure of Variability: Probable range of values resulting from random fluctuations in the number of events. Not calculated when numerator is below 5 or denominator is below 20, or count or rate is suppressed. The MOV is useful for comparing rates to a goal or standard. For example, if the absolute difference between the county rate and the statewide rate is less than the MOV, the county rate is not significantly different from the statewide rate (alpha level = 0.05). When the absolute difference between the county rate and the statewide rate is greater than the MOV, the county rate is significantly different from the statewide rate. MOV should not be used to determine if the rates of two different counties, or the county rates for two different years, are statistically significantly different.

  • Denom - abbreviated for Denominator.

  • Population estimates are not available for persons whose county of residence is unknown. Given this, the denominator and associated rate are not available.

  • * - Indicates the county rate is statistically significantly different from the statewide rate.

  • Data as of December of the specified year
  • This is secondary, quantitative data.
  • All population-based rates are calculated using July 1 Florida population estimates from the Florida Legislature, Office of Economic and Demographic Research.
  • Changes in NICU bed counts from 2021 to 2022 are due to differences in licensing . Beginning in 2022, the Agency for Health Care Administration licenses total NICU beds and the highest level of NICU service available at the hospital.
  • Rates are based on the number of births that occur within a county regardless of state or county residence.
