Child maltreatment and abuse is one of the greatest social maladies of our time. Tracking statistics helps quantify, if only superficially, the significance of the problem.

County is based on the earliest Intake County received by the Hotline for the child if there is more than one Intake during the calendar year.
Age is based on the earliest Age of a Child if more than one intake occurs during the calendar year.
The number of verified sexual abuse allegations began decreasing during calendar year 2006. On August 1, 2006, a new consolidated maltreatment matrix was implemented which combined four of five maltreatment codes into one maltreatment for sexual abuse. The fifth maltreatment code was defined under the maltreatment category of Threatened Harm. This is the reason for the drop in verified sexual abuse maltreatment findings after calendar year 2006.
The state total may be greater than the sum of the counties if any records had unknown counties.
