The newly reported West Nile Virus (WNV) disease case during the week of May 25, 2025 is a 2024 case that was identified in May of 2025 through routine annual data clean up and processing. As of June 3, there have been no Florida resident cases of WNV disease in 2025.
The Florida Department of Health has begun a modernization effort on the Reportable Disease Frequency Report. As a part of this effort, the data will be updated each Thursday to reflect data from the previous Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) week (Sunday – Saturday), which is the standard week used in epidemiology across the country. Updating data on Thursdays allow a four-day window of data quality work to ensure the most accurate data are published.
Numbers displayed are preliminary and will fluctuate up or down over time as case reports undergo further investigation and validation. An initial case classification can switch to another after further investigation; for example, an initial probable case classification could switch to a confirmed case or not a case depending on laboratory, investigation, or medical results. Common diseases where change in initial case classification is seen include, but are not limited to, measles, rubella, salmonella, and varicella.
Data presented here are from Merlin, Florida's web-based reportable disease surveillance system. Data in this report are aggregated by the date the case was reported to the Bureau of Epidemiology, Florida Department of Health. Cases are assigned to Florida counties based on the county of residence at the time of the disease identification, regardless of where they became ill or were hospitalized, diagnosed, or exposed. Disease reporting is an ongoing process. Numbers displayed are preliminary and will fluctuate up or down over time as case reports undergo further investigation and validation. An initial case classification can switch to another after further investigation; for example, an initial probable case classification could switch to a confirmed case or not a case depending on laboratory, investigation, or medical results. Counts include confirmed and probable cases. Summaries of reportable disease data are produced weekly, monthly, and annually and are located on the Bureau of Epidemiology’s Data and Publication page. More detailed information on interpreting data can be found in the Introduction Section of the Annual Morbidity Statistics Reports and final disease counts are found in the AMSR.
