Families Below Poverty Level (Census ACS) 
The percentage of families whose combined income from all family members age 15 or older is below the federal poverty level.

Poverty is a social determinant of health. Families and individuals with incomes below the poverty level have difficulty meeting basic needs such as housing, food, clothing, transportation, etc. A higher percentage of families below poverty level indicates a greater need for assistance such as that provided by government and community-based services and programs.

In 2023, the percentage of Families Below Poverty Level (Census ACS) in Alachua County was 8.8 compared to Florida at 8.9. The line graph shows change over time when there are at least three years of data.

  • Number of families below poverty level divided by the number of families, expressed as a percentage.
  • Data displayed reflect the American Community Survey 5-year estimates for the year selected.
  • A family includes a householder and one or more other people living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption. Persons residing in the same house as the householder, but not related to the householder are not considered as family members and their income is not included when calculating family income.
  • 2000 rates are obtained from the Census long form sample. The 2010 rates are from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. Both data sources incorporate design differences, and must be compared with caution. ACS estimates are less precise than the Census long form, but provide data completeness and an increase in sample coverage.
  • This is secondary, quantitative data.

  • Quartiles are calculated when data are available for at least 51 counties.
