Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. The virus is one of several types of hepatitis viruses that can cause inflammation and affect the liver's ability to function. Hepatitis A is acquired from contaminated food or water or from close contact with a person or object that's infected. Mild cases of hepatitis A don't require treatment. Most people who are infected recover completely with no permanent liver damage.

Hepatitis A rates are monitored to identify and prevent water and food-borne disease outbreaks.

In 2024, the rate per 100,000 of Hepatitis A in Alachua County was 0.3 compared to Florida at 0.5. The line graph shows change over time when there are at least three years of data.

This disease became reportable on July 5, 1999. The first full year of data collection is 2000. Cases occurring in previous years may have been retrospectively identified after becoming reportable. Counts and rates include confirmed and probable cases of Hepatitis A (Merlin code 07010).
Data presented here are from Merlin, Florida's web-based reportable disease surveillance system. Note that any data prior to 1992 are not maintained in Merlin and should be interpreted with caution.
Data in this report are aggregated by the date the case was reported to the Bureau of Epidemiology, Florida Department of Health. Cases are assigned to Florida counties based on the county of residence at the time of the disease identification, regardless of where they became ill or were hospitalized, diagnosed, or exposed.
