Population Served by Community Water Systems 
A community water supply system provides water to the public for human consumption through pipes or other constructed conveyances and serves at least 15 service connections used by year-round residents or regularly serves at least 25 year-round residents (as defined by Florida's Department of Environmental Protection).

Knowing the estimate of the population served by community water systems helps approximate the impact of preventative measures or cautions that would be implemented in the event of contamination or exceedance of harmful substances.

In 2022, the percentage of Population Served by Community Water Systems in Alachua County was 75.8 compared to Florida at 93.7. The line graph shows change over time when there are at least three years of data.

  • The methodology for this measure has changed over time, specifically from 2016 forward. The number of persons served by community water systems is an estimate. Only community water systems that were active at the time of data retrieval are represented in the data. Purchasing among community water systems and public utilization of drinking water from a variety of places and systems occurs; therefore the estimated number of people served may exceed the estimated population in that area and the percent served may exceed 100%.
  • This is secondary, quantitative data.
  • All population-based rates are calculated using July 1 Florida population estimates from the Florida Legislature, Office of Economic and Demographic Research.
  • Chart will display if there are at least three years of data.
  • Multi-year counts are a sum of the selected years, not an average.
  • Quartiles are calculated when data are available for at least 51 counties.
  • MOV - Measure of Variability: Probable range of values resulting from random fluctuations in the number of events. Not calculated when numerator is below 5 or denominator is below 20, or count or rate is suppressed. The MOV is useful for comparing rates to a goal or standard. For example, if the absolute difference between the county rate and the statewide rate is less than the MOV, the county rate is not significantly different from the statewide rate (alpha level = 0.05). When the absolute difference between the county rate and the statewide rate is greater than the MOV, the county rate is significantly different from the statewide rate. MOV should not be used to determine if the rates of two different counties, or the county rates for two different years, are statistically significantly different.
