The past two decades have shown an increase in the number of recreational water illness outbreaks associated with swimming pools, water parks, hot tubs, lakes, rivers and oceans. To protect public health, the Florida Department of Health has adopted sanitation and safety standards for public pools in Chapter 64E-9, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), and enforces those rules through the issuance of operating permits and inspections. County health departments conduct routine inspections, collect samples and maintain standards at public swimming pools and bathing areas to minimize the risk of disease and injury.

In 2024, the percentage of Unsatisfactory Inspections of Swimming Pool and Spa Facilities in Alachua County was 32.9 compared to Florida at 23.4. The line graph shows change over time when there are at least three years of data.

  • These data show the total number of unsatisfactory inspections divided by the total number of inspections performed during indicated time period, with the results expressed as a percentage.
  • Swimming pool inspection data includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID) in the Disney area; however, RCID is neither listed as a county, nor are their data included in the counts of other counties. Instead, they are included in the state total. When the sum of the county data is less than the state total, the difference belongs to the RCID.
  • This is secondary, quantitative data.
  • Chart will display if there are at least three years of data.
  • Multi-year counts are a sum of the selected years, not an average.
  • Quartiles are calculated when data are available for at least 51 counties.
  • MOV - Measure of Variability: Probable range of values resulting from random fluctuations in the number of events.
