WIC provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services to low-income families with a nutritional risk. The number of WIC eligibles is an estimate of need that includes resident live births, estimated population projections, poverty levels and census data.WIC plays a crucial role in improving lifetime health for women, their infants, and young children by intervening at critical times of growth and development. Knowledge of the number of people in need helps in planning for needed resources. Those eligible include pregnant and breastfeeding women, women who have recently been pregnant, infants, and children under the age of 5 who have a low or moderate income, are at nutritional risk, and who live in Florida.
