Note: Traumatic brain injury status is available for all injury hospitalizations, unintentional motor vehicle traffic-related, motor vehicle traffic-related injury to motorcyclist, motor vehicle traffic-related injury to occupant, motor vehicle traffic-related injury to pedalcyclist, motor vehicle traffic-related injury to pedestrian, unintentional-related injury, assault-related injury, violence-related injury, unintentional fall-related injury and all injury Emergency Department (ED) visits.

Definition:
Injury is defined as “physical harm or damage to someone’s body.” These data refer to all injuries, whether intentional or unintentional.

Why do we measure this?:
Monitoring injury data helps determine injury's impact on death and disability. Understanding injury mechanisms and intent helps identify priorities for reducing injuries and their consequences.

Injury Hospitalization*: Principal diagnosis of S00-S99, T07-T34, T36-T50 with a 6th character of 1, 2, 3, or 4 (T36.9, T37.9, T39.9, T41.4, T42.7, T43.9, T45.9, T47.9, and T49.9 with a 5th character of 1, 2, 3, or 4), T51-T65, T66-T76, T79, O9A.2-O9A.5, T84.04**, M97**

Injury Emergency Department (ED) Visits*: Any field with the following primary or secondary diagnosis of S00-S99, T07-T34, T36-T50 with a 6th character of 1, 2, 3, or 4 (T36.9, T37.9, T39.9, T41.4, T42.7, T43.9, T45.9, T47.9, and T49.9 with a 5th character of 1, 2, 3, or 4), T51-T65, T66-T76, T79, O9A.2-O9A.5, T84.04**, M97** OR any field with external cause codes of V00-V99, W00-X58, X71-X83, X92-Y09, Y21-Y33, Y35-Y38

*For diagnosis codes, 7th character of A, B, C, or missing (reflects initial encounter, active treatment). T30-T32 do not have a 7th character. For external cause codes, 7th character of A or missing.

** T84.04 was retired and replaced by M97 in the FY2017 version of ICD-10-CM which went into effect on Oct 1, 2016.

In order to provide population estimates for American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, the US Bureau of the Census population estimates are the foundation for rates in this report; therefore, rates in other areas of FLHealthCHARTS.gov may slightly differ in that they use population estimates based on the Florida Legislature, Office of Economic and Demographic Research.

Veteran Affairs (VA) and other federal hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and psychiatric hospitals are excluded.

To keep abreast of medical knowledge, the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) is revised periodically. Large increases or decreases are typically indicative of such changes. Effective October 1, 2015, the ICD 9th Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) transitioned to ICD 10th Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM). Hospital record data before October 2015 use ICD-9-CM; starting in October 2015, hospital data use ICD-10-CM. Consequently, increases or decreases starting in 2015 may not be due to changes in disease trends but due to changes in coding.

Trends between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM should not be compared as these coding systems are different from each other.

Data may contain multiple hospitalizations or ED visits for the same person/injury event due to hospital transfers, readmissions, and follow-up visits. Therefore, the data reflects the number of hospitalizations or ED visits and not the number of people injured. Data for specific mechanisms of injury may be underestimated due to incomplete reporting of the external cause of injury.
