Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It has often been called "the great imitator" because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases. Early syphilis is a category of syphilis where the initial infection has occurred within the previous 12 months. Early syphilis includes both primary and secondary syphilis, and cases in which the Infection occurred within the previous 12 months, but there were no signs or symptoms of primary or secondary syphilis.Monitoring newly reported syphilis can help prevent the spread of this disease to others.
