Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It has often been called "the great imitator" because so many of the signs and symptoms are indistinguishable from those of other diseases. Infectious syphilis includes primary syphilis, a stage of syphilis infection characterized by one or more ulcerative lesions and secondary syphilis, a stage of infection characterized by localized or diffuse mucocutaneous lesions (e.g., rash ). Patients can spread the disease to others during these stages.Monitoring newly reported syphilis can help prevent the spread of this disease to others.
In 2020, the rate per 100,000 of Syphilis in Alachua County was 57 compared to Florida at 57. The line graph shows change over time when there are at least three years of data.
Alachua County is in the fourth quartile for this measure. This means that relative to other counties in Florida, the rate per 100,000 of Syphilis is less in about three quarters of the counties. The map illustrates county data by quartile. When fewer than 51 counties have data or zero values, no quartile map will be presented.
