The Florida Birth Dashboard provides a written analysis and graphic display of fertility trends in Florida over the past 25 years. There are several maps, charts and graphs, used to illustrate demographic trends from 1989 to 2023, by age, race, and ethnicity. Unknown values of birth are not included in graphs. Due to this, the data displayed in each graphic is only for total known records.
Actual vs expected data help identify geographic areas in the Florida that exhibit statistically significant differences in infant mortality, low birth rates, teen and repeat teen births compared to what would be expected considering the unique demographics of each geographic area. This information may be used to encourage further, more detailed analyses to investigate factors that contribute to the higher than expected rates and to develop intervention strategies for improving outcomes.
The word “Higher” appears for the counties where the number of actual births or infant deaths is statistically significantly higher than the expected number and the word “Lower” appears for the counties where the number of actual births or infant deaths is statistically significantly lower than the expected. For counties without the words “Higher” or “Lower” the number of actual births or infant deaths is not statistically significantly different from the expected number. An alpha level of 0.05 is used for this test, which means that for the counties marked as “Higher” or “Lower” there is a 5% chance that the difference between the actual and expected number is due to random variation.
