Data Note(s)

FLHealthCHARTS.gov is provided by the Florida Department of Health, Division of Public Health Statistics and Performance Management.

  • Rate ratios in this report compare rates of two populations. For example, if the ratio of the black rate to the white rate is 2:1 it would mean that the black rate is two times the white rate. A ratio of 0.5:1 would mean that the black rate is half of the white rate. Rate ratios are not calculated when rates are not provided or are zero, and the rate ratio cell will be blank.

  • All indicators in this profile, except the indicators from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), report rates based on the entire black population and entire white population. Indicators from the BRFSS only include non-Hispanic blacks and non-Hispanic whites in the rates reported. These indicators all begin with the word "Adults".

  • Age-adjusted death rates are computed using the year 2000 standard population.

  • Life expectancy is calculated using the South East Public Health Observatory (SEPHO) method as documented in: Eayres DP, Williams ES, Evaluation of methodologies for small area life expectancy estimation, J Epidemiol Community Health 2004;58:243-249.

  • Disability includes hearing, vision, mobility, cognitive, self-care or independent living disability. For cognitive difficulty, ambulatory difficulty, and self-care difficulty, the 'Population under 18 years' includes persons aged 5 to 17. Children under 5 are not included in these measures.

  • The Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) indicates susceptibility to adverse impacts of hazardous events, including disproportionate death, injury, loss, or disruption of livelihood. Each county receives an overall score, ranging from 0.0 to 1.0, based on 16 community factors. A lower score indicates greater resilience and higher scores indicate greater vulnerability. A percentile ranking represents the proportion of counties or tracts that are equally or less vulnerable than the area of interest; for example, an index ranking of 0.85 means 85% of counties or tracts in the state are less vulnerable and 15% are more vulnerable.
