Hospitalizations From Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas cannot not produce enough insulin or effectively use the insulin that the body produces. Insulin is the hormone that regulates blood glucose, or blood sugar. There are different types of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. In 2024, there were 64,032 hospitalizations from diabetes, which is an increase from 42,730 hospitalizations in 2015. Severe diabetes and uncontrolled blood sugar may lead to premature death with over 7,321 Floridian deaths from diabetes in 2024, an approximate 223.1 years of potential life lost. In 2024, 11.9% of Florida’s population had been told they had diabetes.
